"Actress Lillian Gish" . . . Actress Lillian Gish was a true career woman, never marrying or having children. Her acting spanned the changes from b&w silent films to sound and color, then on to television. Lillian starred in "Birth of a Nation" (1915) and other silent movies but made the transition to sound with ease. Appearing in such diverse genre as westerns ("Duel in the Sun" 1946) and thrillers ("Night of the Hunter" 1955) prepared Ms. Gish for an active career on the small screen from the early 1950's until her memorable performance in "The Whales of August" (1987), the final film appearance for both herself and co-star Bette Davis.
