It started when I was very young. My whole family were artists. As I often say, "I was surrounded by art." My parents my Aunts, Uncles, my grandfather and grandmother, all in the arts. Many were commercial artists, my grandfather was a cartoonist, my dad payed the bills working in NYC for a large firm where he had to make illustrations, cartoons, whatever they needed. My mother painted in oils, watercolors and pastels doing portraits, landscapes, still life, etc. It is the family business. My brother and I have followed suit.

We are all born with some measure of talent. Some can draw some not so well. There are rules. There is history. Some bend the rules, some break them. One needs to know the rules before you can truly break them. Learn the rules or you may find yourself reinventing the wheel. I think it better to know you are trying to reinvent the wheel than to blindly flail about. I see many breaking rules but they never knew there were any to break. Some break the rules thinking they never needed them.

In the arts it is not uncommon to find dyslexics. Often seen as a disadvantage for those with in schools where reading is the emphasis. Nevertheless NASA seems to think Dyslexia desirable and hires many for their problem-solving and special awareness abilities. Interesting.

The issue has grown and morphed over my lifetime. Since Duchamp. I hope to grow old enough to see the, "NEW" wave in art education I see on the horizon. In truth it will be a return to old truths of honing skills only achieved with brush on canvas. Or as Gladwell expresses it, the 10,000 hour rule which my instructors said in a different way, acres of canvas to, "mastery." I'ts about time.

For some time a commentary/discussions about art education have been raging on that there is a dumbing down of the fine arts. Concept over Technique. It is finally, I believe, becoming a serious discussion with some in higher education, those offering degrees in fine art. It will be interesting to see where it all goes and how quickly it gets there.
