Start Simply

I was completely befuddled when it was first suggested that I find something artistic to do. I had no idea how to start. In fact, I was panic-stricken at the thought of trying to draw anything, much less be creative about it.

But after a year of exploration and letting go of self-judgment, art has a whole new meaning to me and I embrace it. I draw nearly every day.

The very first thing I did was to buy some coloring books for grown ups! If you are as scared to dip your toe in as I was, I strongly suggest you do this as well. You will be amazed at the astonishing work done by people in pre-made coloring books. It is a highly relaxing activity that can be done by anyone. The best part is no one cares whether you stay in the lines or not!

Coloring in these books is an art form in itself. In fact, if you end up loving this, you may think about moving into coloring stamps to make cards and other amazing artwork! Here are some samples of art done in the Mystical Mandala Coloring Book (Dover Design Coloring Books) and Garden Fairy Alphabet Coloring Book:

Read more about my personal art journey. You have to trust me that if you just open yourself to the possibility that you have an artist inside you, you will find a way of creative expression that speaks to you. But if you stay closed, fearful, self-judging, and resistant, you will never find your passion and your voice.

So, start today. Start simply. Start art.
