Fall on The New River at Bisset Park Original Pastel Painting has been sold


I have done many paintings of the beautiful New River which is actually one of the oldest rivers in the world. Many of the paintings come from Bisset Park in Radford, Virginia. Radford Virginia is about 30 miles from the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway.

Bisset is Radford’s largest city park and is located on 57 acres of riverfront land in the central part of the city. The park offers walking trails, athletic fields, picnic shelters, children’s playground, a sand volleyball area and other opportunities for outdoor recreation. The three picnic are available for group functions.

I especially enjoy walking by the New River and have painted it many times.

The New River has been linked with numerous different names during our brief history in juxtaposition, with itself. It has been called the Wood, Wood's, Woods, Kanawha, The Great Kahnaway River, and the Cohnaway rivers by various different maps and legends.

One legend has it that various Native American tribes nicknamed it the "River of Death" and the "River of Evil Spirits." How did one of the oldest rivers, possibly on Earth, get the oxymoron of a name such as it has?

It has been documented that Colonel Abraham Wood, a noted English Fur trader, sent two men, Thomas Batts and Robert Fallam into what was then the unexplored outreaches of territorial Virginia. Discovering a river that they had never seen before, Batts and Fallam wrote "new river" on the map that they had drawn, and, without editing the map, turned it to the map maker, and thereafter the New River forever kept its name.

There are a number of explanations for the name of one of the world's oldest rivers. This account is the most accepted origin of the name. I got this information from New River Gorge, an online publication.

I wanted to again mention Clyde' Nature Walk with Nancy Kent which is this Saturday!

My naturalist husband is at it again! This week-end he will be leading a Spring Discovery Walk with Nancy Kent at Wildwood Park in Radford, Virginia. Nancy Kent is a great photographer and retired elementary school teacher.

The two of them are teaming up to help parents and their children learn how to photograph various insects and flowers! What a great way to start off the Spring season and enjoy nature in a beautiful setting! Come with your children for a wonderful and educational outing!



A Charging Rhino

Two weeks ago my husband and son had a nasty virus with congestion and ear infections. A week went by and I didn't develop any symptoms. I bragged that I didn't get it. I finally got sick last Saturday. I shouldn't have bragged!

I have to be at death's door to slow down. I am a workaholic and keep busy all day long. My husband thought I should rest.

I told him that asking me to rest is like asking a charging rhino to get out of the way! Not going to happen.
