I was commissioned to paint this slender Baobab tree which had been planted by Charlie Baty. This man had given 50 years of his life to scouting and had been very influential in our sons lives. Charlie had lost his wife and was intending moving to the USA to live near his 4 children. Three weeks before he was due to leave, he was brutally murdered in his house in broad daylight. This shocked the community as he had given so much of himself in uplifting the people. A new Scout headquarters has been built in Nelspruit and I was approached to paint "Charlie's Tree" in remembrance of this great man.
I have painted the scout hall in the background and at the foot of the tree you will see a ring of stones with a central stone. This is the scout sign for "Gone Home!"
