Hi, Everyone -
I just heard an alarming report on NPR about the plight of the Monarch butterfly. Their numbers are at record low levels - the destruction of their favorite and necessary food source, the milkweed, is a large part of the problem . And the culprit may be the increased use of RoundUp on fields of corn and other crops along their migratory route in the Midwest, which is killing off the milkweed plants that used to be in these fields.
And the reporter asked if the average person would miss them if they became extinct. I would hope so! I don't know what any of us can do - seems like there should be something!
I thought just having them in our sights may help with the awareness of their plight.
There has to be many of us on FAA who love them and have spent time photographing, painting, drawing them.
So please share your images of these remarkable beings in all their splendor!
Any medium is OK - but just be sure the Monarch is the main focus of the image.
Enter up to 10 images - MONARCH BUTTERFLIES ONLY, please.
One of the most easily identified of all butterflies - if you don't know what you have, just please look at the image here and submit photos only if it LOOKS like a MONARCH.
I've had to remove a number of images that were clearly not Monarchs, as even their title called them by another name. Others look similar, but a little comparison shows they are not - most often it is the Viceroy butterfly. Numerous images of 'yellow monarch' have been submitted - these are actually Tiger Swallowtails. But if I made a mistake, please let me know and I will reinstate your photo.
And - maye another contest for all the terrific butterfliy images might be nice - but this is for MONARCHS ONLY.
Vote for as many as you'd like - no limit.
Voting is open to FAA members as well as anyone else who would like to vote.
(The logo is a generic image and is not mine..)
