HDTV in Word & Image - Philip J. Cianci

Book Launch Party & Techno-Art Exhibit

Art Angler Gallery, 232 E 9th St., New York, NY, February 2, 2012, 6-8pm
Author/Artist/Composer/Technologist Philip J Cianci and Art Angler fine gallery invite you to attend the Book Launch Party and Techno-Art Exhibit HDTV in Word & Image, between 6 and 8 pm on Thursday, February 2 at Art Angler Gallery, 232 E 9th St New York, NY, to celebrate the publication of “High Definition Television – the Creation, Development and Implementation of HDTV Technology” by McFarland & Company, and the debut of Mr. Cianci’s HDTV inspired techno-assemblages and experimental mixed media paintings.

About the Book
The 40-year history of high definition television technology is traced from initial studies in Japan, through its development in Europe, and then to the United States, where the first all-digital systems were implemented. Details are provided about advances in HDTV technology in Australia and Japan, Europe’s introduction of HDTV, Brazil’s innovative use of MPEG-4 and China’s terrestrial standard. The impact of HDTV on broadcast facility conversion and the influx of computer systems and information technology are described, as well as the contributions of the first entrepreneurial HD videographers and engineers. This thoroughly researched volume highlights several of the landmark high-definition broadcasts from 1988 onward, includes input gathered from more than 50 international participants, and concludes with the rollout of consumer HDTV services throughout the world.

About the Art
Striving for the aesthetically intelligent fusion of art and technology, this series of “Techno-Artifacts,” focuses on the development and deployment of HDTV and depicts prototype systems and historic moments. Mixed media, glitter, glass stains and hi-tech artifact materials, some of which are genuine remnants of the HDTV R& D effort, are among the materials applied to various surfaces such as Plexiglas, wood and canvas used by Mr. Cianci as he integrates non-objective, optical, impressionistic and representational techniques to create a signature style.

Philip J. Cianci’s quarter century of technical involvement with HDTV systems began at Philips Research USA in the mid 1980’s and then continued at ESPN in the mid 2000s. He was the editor of Broadcast Engineering magazine’s e-newsletter Transition to Digital from 2005 through 2007, and is the author of two Focal Press books about digital television technology. His artistic endeavors include exhibits at the Arts Club of Washington, DC; Computer History Museum, Stanford University; the EExhibition, Red Ink Studios, San Francisco; Art Expo, Javitts Center; Jadite Galleries and Ward-Nasse Gallery. His HDTV inspired creations are in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, HDTV Archive and the Hagley Museum, Wilmington, Delaware.
