One of the most critical parts of any operational flight - just airborne, with barely adequate flying speed and an overloaded aircraft (bombs, fuel and ammunition) the slightest falter in any engine could spell disaster. Repeated time after time on dozens of airfields in south-east England the 8th Air Force launched hundreds of aircraft like this on a daily basis. Watched by non-ops airmen on the control tower the next aircraft is signalled for take-off with a green flare.
