With almost the perfect angle for a deflection shot the Dr1 truly has the French Nieuport in his grasp. The unremitting nature of WW1 air combat was such that this was an everyday occurrence, indeed many times a day, and there was no good end for the vanquished. Fragile aircraft, always too ready to burn, and no parachutes meant that the pilots suffered dreadful attrition rates - some three weeks on Squadron was close to the norm - truly Darwinism in stark cold practice.
