Description
Anthropometry. Man having the width of his head measured. This measurement, along with other standard measurements of body parts, was recorded as part of a general identification system developed in 1883 by the French biometrics pioneer Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914). There were ten standard measurements, such as height, length of ear, and reach of the right arm. These were then used by the police to identify criminals who gave false names. Anthropometry was eventually replaced by fingerprinting. Artwork from the third volume (first period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
