Balancing demonstration. Objects that would not normally balance, such as an egg placed on its narrow end, can be made to balance if extra weights are added in a certain configuration. This is demonstrated here with a pair of downward-pointing forks in a cork balanced on the egg's broader end. This redistributes some of the weight below the balancing point on the rim of the bottle, increasing the stability. This party trick is one of several published in a column in a French popular science weekly. The column was called 'Science Amusante', and this artwork is from the first volume (first period of 1888) of 'La Science Illustree'.
