Description
Cell organelles. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a cell from a kidney proximal tubule. The cell nucleus (partially seen at top left) contains the cell's genetic information in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Here the DNA is complexed with proteins to form chromatin (light brown structures). Surrounding the nucleus are mitochondria (orange), which supply the cell with energy. The strands seen between mitochondria are endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the site of lipid synthesis and the production of membrane-bound proteins.
