Silverfish. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a silverfish (Lepisma saccharina). These primitive insects have remained unchanged for millions of years, and are considered living fossils. These insects have numerous sensory hairs, which allow it to feel its way around. They are also covered in shiny scales which give it its common name. It has two long antennae which are seen protruding from its head at lower right. Silverfish are bristletails of the order Thysanura. They are common household pests, feeding on spilled food such as flour and sugar. They may reach two centimetres in length. Magnification x25 at 6x7cm size.
