Description
A composite X-ray (blue), optical (red & green) image reveals dramatic details of a portion of the Crescent Nebula, a giant gaseous shell created by powerful winds blowing from the massive star HD 192163 (otherwise known as WR 136), which is not shown. In very short star years, HD 192163 expanded its size, became a red giant star, ejecting began a rush towards towards a supernova catastrophe at speeds of 20.000 mph.. The intense radiation from from the exposed hot, inner layer of the began pushing gas away at speeds in excess of# million MPH. At this high speed, the "stellar wind" slammed into the slower red giant wind forming a dense shell, creating two shock waves – one moved outward creating the green filamentary structure and the other moved inward, producing a bubble of million degree gas.
