The historic NYC Marble Cemetery was founded in 1831. Built after a yellow fever outbreak, residents feared burying their dead in coffins just a few feet below ground, and public health legislation had outlawed earthen burials. This cemetery was the 2nd one built with marble burial vaults...hence the name.
