Description
Scratch built electrical coil dating from around 1900, England. Electric coils were used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism', this device may have been used for medical purposes or amusement. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction, it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and up until the early 1900s. It takes its name from Italian physiologist, Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals. Today, the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues is known as electrophysiology.
