Painting - Oil On Canvas
My inspiration for painting "Harbor Light" came to me during a morning harbor cruise off Chicago's Navy Pier in December, 2008. The sun was shining brightly above the iced-over harbor that morning. While looking down from the ship's railing towards the icy water, I became fascinated by the way the ship's hull broke the ice apart and pushed away the thin layer that gripped the harbor.
With my thoughts wandering ... I began to see what could have been a battle of sorts staged before me: warm sunshine vs. the cold air, calm water contained within the harbor vs. the rough water on the open lake, frozen ice & snow vs. ice set in motion by our moving vessel, a rock-solid breakwater vs. the soft translucent clouds above. Instead, all these opposites were juxtaposed in peaceful coexistence to create this idyllic setting.
