Description
Industrial ice production, 19th-century artwork. These blocks of ice formed inside containers (right) that have just been tilted to eject them. The containers were filled with water and cooled by the evaporation of ammonia to form the ice. Each block consists of 1500 kilograms of ice. This is the method used to produce ice at the Knickerbocker Ice Company of Philadelphia, USA. Artwork from the 13th volume (first period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
