Description
Original Oil painting on canvas, approx 44 in x 18 in.
A fanciful semi-abstract (abstract realist) underwater or aquarium scene with groupings of bright fish. The fish are offset by bold blue on blue brushwork with hints of green and violet, suggesting a jewel-toned sea.
The background blue was laid in first as a series of wet translucent layers. Turpentine was flicked onto the canvas to create contrasting white drips and bubbles and to texture the water background. While the blue background was still quite wet, a squeegee tool was used to sketch out the outlines and textures in the fish, creating a negative image in white. The effect is rather like scratchboard drawing. Translucent and transparent glazes of color were laid over the fish, using a gel impasto medium. The painting was finished by adding painted details in alkyd color with a fine brush.
