Marine Diatom Alga, Sem
Photograph - Photograph
Diatom alga. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of a marine diatom alga. Diatoms form a large part of the marine phytoplankton, the tiny plants that form the basis of the marine food chain. Diatoms are single-celled algae known for the intricate shells (frustules) that they produce around themselves. The tiny holes in the frustule seen here are called striae.
