Meyer Guggenheim c. 1895, seated in the center, surrounded by his seven sons (from left to right) William, Murry, Isaac, Daniel, Solomon, Simon and Benjamin. Meyer Guggenheim (1828-1905), a Swiss German Jew, emigrated to America and made a fortune in the mining and smelting industries. The Guggenheims later became philanthropists in such areas as modern art and aviation.
