Description:

Turtle at center, surrounded by elk in the four colors of the universe, connected by vines is a visual prayer for balance and integrity of our world, respect for all life forms, and living in harmony with one another. This painting combines imagery and mystic themes and symbols from my Celtic and Native American background. In many ways these paths are similar, and I like to focus on simularities rather than differences. Mitakuye Oyasin is a Lakota term that means all things in this universe are relatives, and that all occurances are interconnected. In this painting Ive incorporated visual and spiritual imagery from 2 ancient earth centered cultures; the old Irish and Lakota traditions. Deer are important totems in the old ways of both cultures, generally portraying sexual attraction, fertility, leadership, and noble spirit. The elk are rendered using the colors of Lakota traditional four directions. Each direction is a doorway, opening into a specific symbolism and wisdom attributed to it. They are connected to one another by a network of web and spiral, a motif inspired by ancient Irish manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. At the center is turtle, a female totem in the Lakota tradition. In many cultures turtle symbolizes earth herself, but also wisdom, strength, motherhood and integrity. Thus turtle at center, surrounded by elk in the four colors of the universe, connected by The orginal is archivally framed and has a double 'arctic white' matt. The frame itself is elegant, simple, and will show readily in any decor If you are interested in a larger image than offered here, please contact me.

Tahnk you. I love working wtih details and this painting presented opportunity to indulge this passion. There are a few things I'd do different now, so I hope to paint a second, earthy version sometime soon.
