Moments In Time
Painting - Oil On Canvas
This is a painting of the full moon rising over the ocean. It is a cold night but not yet winter. The waves gently roll onto the rocky shoreline as the moon lights up the water in the distance. I had originally thought this painting was finished before but I did not like the overall look of it. There was not enough variation between the different areas of water, sky and rocks. Although I darkened it in a lot of areas I also added more white to the small waves to give a better feeling of motion. The white in the sky ties in better with the water and the black in the rocks fits with the black in the sky. When I paint I usually start with a black canvas. This allows the colors to remain rich. I also do not use any thinners. I prefer the thick paint with broad brushstrokes when I create my scenes. Most of the paintings I do come from actual places. I do not like to make my pictures look exactly like what I see. Instead I prefer to take what is seen in nature and manipulate it into the how I see the world around me. Almost all of my paintings have some form of water in them. I really enjoy painting water because there is so much creativity there. Water has the ability to transform the world thru which it travels. It can also change how a picture is viewed. Darker water tends to give the feel of a cooler day. The lighter colored water makes to picture a warmer. I also enjoy doing larger paintings. The larger surface allows me to capture more of the natural scene and gives me more opportunity to explore my own ideas . Because I choose landscapes and seascapes I have an almost unlimited supply of ideas from which to draw upon. I also enjoy making each of my paintings look original and different not following a specific form.
