Description
Mount St Helens lahar area regrowth. View in 1988 from the south towards Mount St Helens, Washington State, USA. During the eruption of 18 May 1980, a large lahar (mud flow) originated from the south side of the volcano, destroying a large area of forest. The lahar was caused by snow and glacier ice melting in the summit region. Here, in 1988, the first plants are colonizing the lahar plain. By 2001, as shown in C019/4350, the first coniferous trees had started to grow. It will take several more decades before the scar left by the lahar will no longer be visible.
