Volcanic bombs. Night view of the eruption of Alaid volcano in 1988. Alaid is 2339 metres high, and forms the bulk of Ostrova Atlasova, an island in the Kuril chain north of Japan. An explosive eruption is in progress at the cone, with volcanic bombs leaving trails of light in the sky. These are clots of liquid lava, typically 40-50cm in diameter, that are thrown from an erupting vent.
