Description:

Sonja Olson’s latest work speaks indirectly to the natural human instinct to create patterns, from micro to macro, and to see them in everything from clouds to constellations. More directly, the overall composition of each work in the series belies the simple idea of pattern by presenting an expressive, multi-planed and ambiguous picture, but still works as part of a series, which creates an inexact pattern of repetition and theme. The urge to create, and then do it over and over again, whether widgets, clothing, or floors in a high-rise, is to some degree the story of western civilization since the industrial revolution. The dress patterns embody the need for all of us to adhere to the conventions of society, or those of our particular microcosm or niche, while the introduction of other elements, in this case quasi-architectural, disrupt the patterns and create ambiguity among them, serving the rebellious needs of autonomy and individual creativity.
