Description
Potassium channel research. Molecular model of the molecular structure of a KcsA potassium ion (K+) channel (brown spirals, centre) from a mouse (mus musculus), in complex with FAB antibody fragments (multicoloured swirls, top, bottom, left and right). Ion channels are membrane-spanning proteins that form a pathway for the movement of inorganic ions (purple sphere, centre) across cell membranes. K+ channels have many functions including regulating the secretion of hormones, generating electrical nerve impulses, and controlling the pace of the heart. Antibody fragments are used in research to help understand the structure and operation of proteins.
