Description
The Rusty Robber Frog (Strobomantis bufoniformis) has gone through some considerable taxonomic changes moving from Eleutherodactylus to Craugastor to Strobomantis in just a few short years. This is a large frog commonly inhabiting riparian montane habitat. One of the foods they eat in the wild are freshwater crabs. They range from Costa Rica to the Pacific versant of Colombia. However, this species has suffered declines in the wake of the amphibian communicable disease caused by chytrid fungus, chytridiomycosis. This species has proven difficult to successfully breed in captivity. This frog was photographed in 2008 in the Atlanta Botanical Garden's amphibian conservation laboratory.
