Description
Sperm cell, computer artwork. This is a mature human sperm cell, the male gamete (sex cell) in reproduction. A sperm cell is composed of a head (bottom left), a body (centre) and a tail (top right). The head consists of an acrosome (pink), a cap-like structure that breaks down the egg cell wall. Also shown is the cell's genetic information as a chromosome. The body of the sperm cell contains mitochondria (spiral structures, orange), that produce the energy required for the sperm cell to swim through the female genital tract. The tail contains axial filaments that move the tail and propel the sperm cell forward.
