Description
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sect- ion through the plant bacteria Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. These bacteria have also been placed in the genera Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas. They are Gram-negative rod-shaped (bacilli) bacteria which live in soil, water and milk. As well as being pathogenic in plants, they have also been known to cause opportunistic infections in humans. Flagellae (long strands) are seen on these bacteria. These threads are beaten to enable the bacteria to move. Magnification unknown.
