Description
Asphalt lake. Image 1 of 5. Asphalt being recovered by a digger (right). It will be removed by truck (left) for processing. The vehicles can drive on the lake's asphalt surface for a few hours in the morning, before it begins to melt in the sun. Sir Walter Raleigh is credited with discovering this lake in 1595, which is the largest deposit of asphalt in the world. It covers a surface area of approximately 360, 000 square metres. Asphalt is a semi-solid substance composed of bitumen and other inert mineral matter, which is used in road- surfacing. Photographed at La Brea, Trinidad. See E790/007-011, for asphalt recovery from the lake.
