Description
Kidney filtration. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of one of the many glomerular structures in a kidney. The thick, branching areas are the podocyte cells that enclose the glomerular structure. Below and between the podocyte cells is the coiled capillary that is the core of a glomerulus. The function of the glomeruli is to filter waste products from the blood passing through the coiled capillary. Liquid passes from the blood through the slits formed by the podocyte cells. Some of the liquid contents are reabsorbed elsewhere in the kidney, and the waste liquid (urine) is stored in the bladder.
