Description
Avalokiteshvara (Tib.: Chenrezig) - The Bodhisattva of Great Compassion
Avalokiteshvara (The One who hears the cries of the world) is the Buddha of Great Compassion and Protector of Tibet. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is considered to be the earthly incarnation of Avalokiteshvara.
Besides the 4-armed form, Avalokiteshvara also appears in this 1000-armed version.
The story goes as follows: At a certain point Avalokiteshvara was bitterly dissapointed realising that in fact he had helped only a small number of beings out of their misery, and he called out: "What is the use? I can do nothing for them, it's better for me to be happy and peaceful myself." As a result of this cry, his head split into ten pieces and his body into a thousand, filling him with unbearable pain. Amithaba, his spiritual father, immediately appeared before Avalokiteshvara and restored his broken body, transforming his torn flesh into a thousand hands and ten faces, crowned by one extra face; a replica of his own.
Avalokiteshvara reminds us that awakening is not an escape or retreat from personal problems, but rather reaching outward and embracing the entire world with the love and compassion of our heart.
