Description
Brain, historical anatomical artwork. This is an axial (parallel to the ground) section of the brain (with the front at top) showing cortical tissue (white, outer) and the corpus callosum (white, central). The corpus callosum is a large nerve bundle that connects the right and left cerebral hemispheres, and the largest white matter structure in the human brain. Almost all of the communication between the hemispheres passes through the corpus callosum. This illustration is taken from the 19th century French textbook The Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob.
