Description
Intestinal lining. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of villi (red) from the lining of the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Villi are finger-like projections that increase the surface area available for the absorption of nutrients. Cell within the villi produce mucus (green), a slippery substance that protects the lining and eases the passage of food along the intestines.
