Sharon, do you grow orchids in your garden, on a porch, or in a greenhouse? Many people here in San Jose do all three options -and we get 30-degree night temperatures in the winter on too-frequent occasions, so your location is a source of envy! :))

I do have orchids in my own garden . . it is wonderful you know for here on Maui it is always summer . and many plant orchids on trees so that the plants grow and fill the tree trunk and canopy with orchid blooms . it is quite a display . . I enjoy planting orchids into a hollowed-out coconut . . by placing rich soil and spagnum moss and securing it with light wire then hanging it from the branch of a tree . . considering there are over 30,000 varieties of orchids it is interesting to research them for so many different types require different growing conditions . . although this beauty was photographed in a lovely botanical garden near Kepaniwai . . It is called Maui Tropical Gardens . . Here is an informative quote from gardeners.com . . "Terrestrial orchids, such as paphiopedilums and some cymbidiums, grow in soil. But most tropical orchids are epiphytes, which means that they grow in the air, rather than in soil. Their fleshy roots are covered with a layer of white cells called velamen, which acts as a sponge to absorb water. The coating also protects the roots from heat and moisture loss. An orchid growing medium must provide good air circulation and permit water to drain very quickly. It must also give the roots something secure to cling to. Depending on the type of orchid, they can be happy growing in peat moss, fir bark, dried fern roots, sphagnum moss, rock wool, perlite, cork nuggets, stones, coconut fiber, lava rock or a blend that combines several of these materials. Some epiphytic orchids can also be wired onto slabs of tree fern or cork."
