Description
Biofilm (green) on a cotton swab, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This biofilm was collected from around the drain of an apparently clean kitchen sink. It contains bacteria and other micro-organisms embedded in a matrix of protein, polysaccharides and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). This holds the micro-organisms together in clusters and protects the cells, making them more resistant to antibiotics, detergents and other agents. This biofilm has been picked up and trapped within the fibres (brown) of the cotton bud.
