Bernard �Barney� Fife is a fictional character in the American television program The Andy Griffith Show, portrayed by comic actor Don Knotts. Barney Fife is a deputy sheriff in the slow paced, sleepy southern community of Mayberry, North Carolina. He Appeared in the first five black and White seasons (1960-1965) as a main character.
Knotts had macular degeneration in both eyes caused the otherwise robust Don Knotts to become virtually Blind. Don Knotts died on February 24th 2006 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California from Pulmonary and Respiratory Complications to Pneumonia related to Lung Cancer.
Don Knotts made 31 Movies over his long career. In 1999 TV Guide ranked him Ninth on it�s 50 Greatest TV Characters of All-Time. Don Knotts won 5 Emmys and in 2000 was recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
