Description
Kidneys and ureters. Computer artwork showing the kidneys, the main organs of the urinary system. The kidneys are located in the upper abdomen. The function of the kidneys is to filter waste products such as urea from the blood to form urine. The urine drains to the bladder (not seen) through the ureters (tubes running downwards). The urine leaves the bladder through the urethra. On top of each kidney is an adrenal gland (orange). This gland produces adrenaline, along other hormones. Adrenaline is produced as part of the flight-or-fight response.
