Slate quarrying, 19th century. Illustration of workers carrying out an ancient and traditional method of quarrying slate in the Angers region of France. Slate is a grey rock that can be split into thin, flat sheets. It is quarried for use in the construction industry. Illustration of Artwork from volume 6 (1874) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
