Color enhanced illustration of author and revolutionist Thomas Paine (1737-1809). A recent arrival from England, Paine published his pamphlet "Common Sense" in 1776, attacking the monarchy and urging Americans to cut ties with England. The pamphlet, written after the start of the American Revolution, became widely read in the colonies, appealing to the common man with a style that was easy to understand. "Common Sense" initiated public debate and encouraged recruitment for the Continental Army.
