Blood screening. Blood plasma samples being dispensed by an automated sample handler. They will undergo nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis C virus (HCV). This is done by amplifying the RNA (ribonucleic acid) present so that specific genes (sections of RNA) unique to the individual viruses may be detected. This test can be used earlier than an antibody test, which requires an immune response before the test will show up positive for an infection.
