Diamonds. Diamond is a naturally occurring form of carbon that has crystallised under great pressure. The crystals may be colourless and transparent or yellow, brown or black. Diamonds are prized as gemstones. Because they are the hardest known mineral, poorer quality specimens are used in industry, mainly for cutting and grinding tools. Industrial diamonds are increasingly produced synthetically.
