Description
Interior of a long bone, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The outer layer (pink, right) comprises proliferating cartilage. In the centre is cancellous (spongy) bone containing the bone marrow (red), the site of blood cell production. This is surrounded by compact bone (brown), through which Haversian canals (holes) pass. These carry nerves and blood vessels.
