Neanderthal DNA extraction. Technician dispensing freshly drilled fossilised Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) bone into a test tube containing liquid substrate. The sample will have its genetic material extracted and sequenced as part of the Neanderthal genome project. Neanderthals were early humans who lived in Europe and the Middle East from 100,000 to 30,000 years ago.
