Pollen grain. Coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM) of a pollen grain. Pollen grains, containing the male sex cells (gametes), are reproductive structures produced by the male parts of flowering plants. The characteristic surface of pollen grains is used by botanists to recognise and classify plants.
