Painting - Acrylic On Pine Panel
In 2008, China prepared to enter the glory of the Olympics and good luck being number 8. But alas, the luck turned bad with earthquakes, children buried alive and protesters in almost every city the Olympic torch passed highlighting China's human rights violations. Chinese intellectuals gathered and wrote a declaration of a bill of rights and 303 intellectuals signed the document. The document asked for broader freedoms of political stance and balance of power, which scared the CCP greatly. The CCP found one of the writers and demanded he take down that website, which he refused. For hosting this website, Liu Xiabo was sentenced 11 years in prison for speaking his mind. Over 8000 people have signed Charter 08 to date.
I have the 19 phrases, which summarize the points in the document in the painting:
1. Amend the constitution
2. Separation of Powers
3. Leglislative democracy
4. Independent Judiciary
5. Public control of public servants
6. Guarantee of human rights
7. Election of public officials
8. Rural-urban equality
9. Freedom of association
10. Freedom of assembly
11. Freedom of expression
12. Freedom of religion
13. Civic education
14. Protection of private property
15. Financial and tax reform
16. Social Security
17. Protection of the environment
18. A federal republic
19. Truth in reconciliation
The 19 phrases make up 76 hanzi, which is symbolic of 1776, the declaration of US independence. Another cut is that 7 represents conscious and 6 is responsibility or conscious responsibility. There are 8 rows, which symbolize sudden fortune in China. There are 10 columns, which symbolize the rebirth or absoluteness in China. Hence, the combination is a sudden fortune via rebirth or absoluteness. The frame has most of the 303 signatures written in Chinese as well.
On Oct 8th, 2010, Liu Xiabo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the CCP rounded up his wife for merely telling him about the prize.
In a twist the CCP tried to organize a "Confuscious Peace Prize" the day before the Nobel Prize goes to Liu Xiabo. The CCP has refused anybody related to Liu to leave the country to be able to accept the prize with many under house arrest. Ironically, the winner of the farce CCP prize in China refused to accept the prize, so only a little girl accepted the prize.
