An electric coil with hand grips in its case. This piece dates from around 1840, and originates from Derby, England. It bares the name of 'medical galvanist', T. Richardson, in gold lettering. Electric coils such as this one were used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism', to cure nervous diseases. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction, it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued until the early 1900s. Galvinism takes its name from Italian physiologist, Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals.
