INTRODUCTION This project concerns the terra-cotta army gradually being unear thed near the 2,200-year-old tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, outs ide the city of Xian. New excavations in Pit 2 reveal a garrison of some 1,400 pieces archers, cavalry troops, charioteers, infantrymen, and horses. They are a mani festation of the first emperor's quest for immortality and eternal glory and po wer. ------ LEGEND A line of assembled horses' heads chariot horses of the terra-cotta army, or part of its cavalry.
