Pulmonary embolism. Computed tomography (CT) scan of a section through a 65 year old male patient's chest showing blood clots, or embolisms (white, centre left adn centre right), in the pulmonary trunk. Smaller clots may cause shortness of breath, dizziness and chest pain. Larger clots can be fatal, as the blood is quickly starved of oxygen. Thrombolytic drugs can be used to break up a clot, and anti-coagulant drugs may help prevent the formation of others. The artefacts at the bottom of the image are due to the patient breathing.
